Baltic Sail is an international agreement between cities of the Baltic Sea, initiated by a German port of Rostock in 1991. The purpose behind the foundation was, and still remains today, to promote the maritime heritage of the European region of the Baltic Sea and to support traditional sailing from Port to Port.
Nowadays’ members of the Baltic Sail include: Klaipeda, Gdansk, Rostock, Karlskrona, Halmstad, Sassnitz, and Swinoujscie. 2011 will be the 15th year when partner cities host these sailing festivals, bringing to citizens and tourists maritime tradition of the Baltic Sea Region.

For all these years the Baltic Sail Gdansk has been the biggest international sailing event in Gdansk. Last year’s celebrations saw Matusz Kusznierewicz, Olympic Champion from Atlanta 1996, an honorable guest and Commander of the event, being awarded the title of Gdansk Ambassador on Maritime Affairs. This outstanding Polish sailor has accepted the Town Hall’s invitation to be the event’s Commander once again this year.

The teams will arrive at the Gdansk marina for a period between July 7 - 10. The event is open for all sea-going vessels, so old fishing boats and runabouts are also welcome. The overall goal of the event is to integrate the people of sailing while promoting the maritime heritage of Gdansk. Sailors shall use the opportunity to meet those sharing their passion, gain new experience, and establish new relationships. Yet Baltic Sail is also a unique promotion opportunity for Gdansk, hence the city has been putting a tremendous effort to be well prepared for the event. The celebrations have been designed with everyone’s taste in mind: sailing enthusiasts will be able to present themselves to visitors, while the latter will have a chance to breathe the air of true sea adventures. All yachts will be open to guests seeking to soak in their history and traditions. Another rare attraction will be Gdansk Bay sailing cruises onboard one of the Baltic Sea tall ships.

With many ages of maritime tradition, Gdansk is the perfect choice for such events. All vessels will moor in downtown marina, right by Szafarnia Street. The Harbormaster assures that there will be room for everybody.
